I'm in love

iPhone applications went live today. I just downloaded a couple and OMG I'm in love! Sarah, you'd love this one. There's an application called "urbanspoon" and it will figure out your location and if you are indecisive or don't know where to eat, you can just shake your phone and it'll pick for you! If you don't like the choice, you shake it again! Unfortunately Charlottesville is not on the list of cities, but NYC is! And I can't wait to try it out. I'm shaking it right now and it's saying to eat at Pio Pio on 702 Amsterdam Ave. How cool is that??? It even tells you how many people like it, price level and phone number. Ah!

Oh, and pandora is on the iPhone now too! I love listening on my computer, now I can do it on the go! Yay!

There are many, many things I would love about the iPhone. Unfortunately it is not an option for me. I think that is part of why I hate all Verizon's phones...none of them have the same features i.e. free internet from WiFi/apps.

Pio Pio is good. There is also one on the UES by my apartment. :)

So, so jealous. Am still tempted to buy one and unlock it...how long till they release for other carrierrrrrs? (Carriers said descending into a whine)

Sarah said...

I don't think you can unlock it as it uses GSM not CDMA.

V - you should research it for us. You are the most knowledgeable about tech stuff. ;)

It'll never work on verizon because they aren't on GSM...

Sorry, but I have to play sour grapes on this one. I want one so bad but then I wouldn't be able to play this on it....My new favorite game. Bought it last night for PS3 and will probably buy it for DS this weekend.

Why does Verizon suck so much? When will they ever not go GSM?

Vika said...

I know some people who use it on T-Mobile though.. Bite the bullet and go with AT&T. You can get the iPhone for $199 as a new user and it's soooo worth it!

Vika said...

What is that? Maybe they will port it to the iPhone.. And why wouldn't you be able to play it? Would it kill your PS3 somehow?

A PC game that was recently released for PS3, Xbox 360, and DS. You pick a culture and build your civilization from ancient times to present, including building cities and armies, building museums and libraries, etc. You can win by conquering other cities, being more culturally evolved, and/or being more technologically advanced. Played it for about 4 hours last night and am going to get the DS version, too, so I can play it on the way to work. So for now I'm happy w/ my DS and enV.

Sounds very involved... But fun, I suppose. I used to like Sims a lot, so I guess I can relate.

Speaking of pandora, either one of you using it?

J said...

It is similar to Sims and is fairly involved...my thumbs are sore from playing it for 4+ hours Wed & Thurs night...
Yeah, I listen to Pandora on the weekends: I've made a great country music station and a great 50's bubble gum pop station. :)

A-ha! I was right! My family has a plan with Verizon, so we can call each other for free. Switching isn't desirable or feasible. I'll just have to survive with infinitely less cool phone options.

I don't use Pandora, although I have heard great things.

Vika said...

Yes, but AT&T has rollover minutes! I have like 2,000 sitting there...

Sarah said...

Not going to win this one... :) Just have to disagree.

Vika said...

Boo! Just get your whole family to switch! Verizon sucks!

How is their service in Charlottesville & Nelson? Did your phone work in the mountains?
Also, did you get the new 3G phone? Do you get 3G coverage in Cville? Read an article that said you might not always get 3G coverage depending on where you are....here. Scroll down to this paragraph: "There is, however, a catch: you don’t get that speed or those features unless you’re in one of AT&T’s 3G network areas — and there aren’t many of them."

J said...

I need more details..Can I borrow your phone the weekend of the 26th so I can see how it works in Nelson? :)

Vika said...

Yeah, C'ville is not a 3G area, so I'm waiting until the NYC move to get one. With the new applications the old iPhone is just as good. Just missing the GPS. I get good service here. With Verizon I didn't get picture messages and internet was spotty. I'm online on my iPhone all the time. My phone seemed to work fine when we went hiking.

Sarah said...

I'm pretty sure you liked Verizon fine until the iPhone's advent.

Vika said...

It was good in NYC. But they don't have a tower in C'ville unfortunately, so I had spotty service.

J said...

Yes, I did. However, they do have spotty coverage at my parent's house, which is annoying. Not sure if it's their new phones or firmware, or something, but supposedly they're building towers in Nelson. And yes, I just want the new iPhone. Apparently you can legally buy an unlocked one for use on other carriers for $600.

Sarah said...

Verizon has rough service at my parents house too... But seriously our ENTIRE, extended too, family is on it. Maybe one day. :)

Vika said...

I'm not sure if it's "legally unlocked". You can buy one without an AT&T contract for that much, but I think you will still have to unlock it. And btw, they already have a crack for it, I believe. Then you can use it on whatever network you want except Verizon, which is stupid and decided to be on a different standard...

J said...

I was talking about it w/ Chessa and I think we could seriously call up Verizon and say, my whole family (10+people) have your service but are going to switch to At&T to get the new iphone unless you give us a price break. There was a lifehacker article on it somewhere...

Vika said...

It might work...

My one complaint about the iphone is the fact that it can't send/receive picture messages. It's annoying to have to log in on the website to check them out. Oh well. I suppose I can email them.

One way to get the applications, at least around WiFi, would be getting the iPhone Touch instead of the Nano. Just thought of that this weekend when chatting with Matt and watching him play with the new version of the iPhone. He liked UrbanSpoon a lot!

Vika said...

Oh yeah, I forgot about the iPod Touch. Except that you have to pay extra to upgrade the software and stuff, but you're right, once you pay the $9.99 I think you'll be able to use all of the programs. I'm not sure how wifi is at locating where you are though. I think my phone uses the cell towers to figure out the location...

I'm sure I would investigate quite a bit before investing in one. It was mostly an idle thought. :)
