My computer will not load Google/Gmail and loads other sites slowly. It has turned off autoupdates and I cannot turn them back on. Random pop-ups are occurring. I have an infestation. :(
Just wanted to let you know in case you missed me!

I'm having the same problem! I can't open Google Docs, so I can't do my finances! What happened? We broke the innernets! Let me know if you want Mike to take a look at your computer- he can call you and talk you through some stuff
Most everything has fixed, but I still can't access my gmail or search certain websites related to google (mainly). I can log into livejournal, aol, and blogger BUT not gmail. Weird that you are having the same issue... Matt was here for a few hours trying to figure it out and couldn't. Sigh.
How about Mike calls you today and walks you through some things? What time is good for you?
Not sure what my Google Docs problem was but now it's fixed.
All fixed?
Several Trojan Horses reside on my computer. I have disabled internet access on it, which isn't that big of a change since the pages I used most often were not accessible.
I am running the following programs to try to track down and destroy the related files: Spybot, CClean, AdAware, and AVG. PAINFUL! Don't know where I got it from either...
Matt Oz tried to fix it. Jim talked me through Spybot on the phone. Matt will be back up in 2 weeks and is going to help me just do a fresh install of the Operating System etc.
Wow, that sucks. Are you running XP? And did you have any anti-virus program running?
Yes, I am running XP. I had AVG on my computer... I haven't really been downloading stuff from anywhere.
Basically the programs are making .dll files run as applications in the background. My registry is all screwed up.
J - does Mike know of any other good cleaning programs? I would need a direct link to the site to type out as I can't Google search, etc.
Mike says your better off removing your programs and re-doing the whole computer. He said he'd come up into the city and fix it for you, but it'll cost you a beer.
Wow, I never get him into the city! I'm going to start sending you viruses all the time!
Is Matt Oz coming up special just to fix your computer, or was he coming up anyway? ;)
I know removing everything and doing a fresh install is better. I don't have a method to back up my music, pictures, etc. though... Matt offered to bring a device for that (around 50 GB) and take care of it when he is in the city anyway...
Speaking of broken computers... I got tired of waiting for a windows update to get installed last night, turned off my computer in the middle and now I have to reinstall everything. Windows refuses to boot up even in safe mode. Anyway, at least I have the Darden bundle, so I just dropped it off at the help desk this morning, hopefully they'll have it working for me by tonight.
Disaster! Is it fixed yet? Windows is so tricky sometimes. I thought you quit using it for some reason? Next time just leave it on and go to bed while it finishes up!
Mike can bring down his stuff if you want to install something else; I'm sure he has XP somewhere....I'll ask him.
I have all the disks for a reinstall (XP, Microsoft Office). I just don't have a back-up method...
Rock on and gotcha. Probably week after next when we're back from VA. In the meantime, how about looking at Staples or Office Depot for portable hard drives, etc, ok?
I thought he was going to loan me one for the project. I know I need to buy one... I'll probably just get a Western Digital one on amazon. Not what I really want to spend on now. I want stuff for Yellowstone!
Yes, he'll loan you one for the project. But you should look for one for you to have bc you need one. Or just burn it all on DVD's.
Yeah, yeah I know I need one! Don't worry... ;)
I bought my computer in 2004. It can play DVDs but can't burn them. Seems crazy, but it is true. I didn't really skimp on the purchase either.
